Recommended For Younger Teens (Grades 6 through 8)

A Taste of Blackberries, Doris Smith, Apple Fiction, 1973.  The story is told by the friend of a boy who dies of bee stings. The families of both boys have to deal with the grief.

Circle of Gold, Candy Boyd, Scholastic, 1984.  
After Mattie's father dies, her family seems to fall apart. Her mother is angry and her twin brother is quiet and sullen. Mattie finds a way to help her family work through their grief.

Fire in My Heart, Ice in My Veins: A Journal for Teenagers Experiencing Loss, Enid Samuel Traisman.  
This is a journal that encourages teenagers to work through their grief in a creative and healthy way. It allows them to keep permanent memories of the person that died. It also gives them skills to help them throughout life when faced with grief and loss.

How It Feels When a Parent Dies, Jill Kementz, Alfre A. Knoff.  
This is a book about what it means to children when a parent dies. Eighteen children from seven to sixteen years old speak openly and honestly of their experiences and feelings.
Mick Harte Was Here, Barbara Park, Bullseye Books, Random House, 1995.  
A twelve-year old boy is killed in a bicycle accident. The sister tells the story of how the death touches her family and the school the boy attended.

The Common Threads of Teenage Grief, Janet Tyson, Centering Corporation.
The author is a middle school counselor. She shares stories of teens that struggled with grief and overcame those struggles.

The Day I Saw My Father Cry, Bill Cosby, Scholastic, 2001.  
Bill Cosby, of TV fame, tells the story of the death of a neighbor and close friend.The lessons in living in harmony that were taught by the man are shared.

The Keeping Quilt, Patricia Polocco, Aladdin, 1988.  
The author tells the story of six generations of her family as she talks about a family quilt.
