Journey of Hope ~ 10 Years of Service

Children Ages 3-5 (Preschool)

Grandfather and I, Buckley Lothrop, Helen E. and Jan Ormerod, Lee & Shepard Books, 1994
This story of how the oldest in the family teaches the youngest about life is based on time the two spend in the woods. The cycle of life is shared.

How Are You Peeling?, Joost Freymann, Saxton and Effers, Arthur A. Levine Books, 1999.
This book contains colored pictures of fruits and vegetables with varied emotions on their faces. The child can talk about he feels and why.

How Do You Say It Today, Jesse Bear?, Nancy White Carlstrom, Scholastic, 1992.
The colorful book takes the little bear through a year with his family. The love of the family and the seasons provide opportunities to discuss a death.

Just Like You, Jan Fearnley, Candlewick Press, 2001.
A small mouse and his mother meet different animals on their way home. Each animal gives the mother an opportunity to tell a new way that she loves the little mouse. The book can be a comfort to a grieving child. The assurance that there will always be someone there to love the child can be shared.
Something From Nothing, Phoebe Gilman, Scholastic, 1992.
A Jewish grandfather makes his grandson a coat. As the boy gets larger, the coat is reshaped into other things for the boy to use and love. The example of a lifetime spent in giving love can be the basis for a discussion of a loved one who has died.

When Dinosaurs Die, Lauree Kransing and Marc Brown, Little, Brown and Company, 1996.
This book does not tell a story. It addresses children’s fears and curiosity. It provides ways to remember someone like plant a tree, write a poem, or draw a picture.

Winnie the Pooh, Everyone Is Special, Disney, Advance Publishers, 2000.
This book about Pooh and his friends lets the child know how special he, or she, is. The child can then talk about the ways the loved one he lost was special.
